GSA Roundtable Meetings

The 2012-13 GSA Roundtable meetings will be held on

Tuesday March 19th from 4:30 – 6:30pm at downtown Library.

Meetings are held once a month (during the school year) for students,

teachers, staff, and administrators to meet, network, and share strategies

in support of sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ) youth attending Junior

& Senior High Schools in the greater Edmonton area.

Student Finance – Student finance meeting for all funded students next Tuesday at 11:30 in the VC room.

Quit Smoking! – Smoking cessation packages sponsored by Alberta Health Services are available at front desk for those students who wish to quit smoking!

Calling All Campers – Anyone hoping to go on the camping trip to Goldeye Lake from May 24-26 needs to attend a short meeting in the Video Conference Room on Tuesday at 12:45. Make sure you are there.

Job Searching? – Neda and Tim are still helping students with interview skills, job interview clothing, resume updating, cover letter writing and job searches.

Certificates for your resume! – Don’t Have your WHIMIS or Fall Protection Certificate? Want your CSTS ticket to work on construction sites? See Tim.

BSEC Career Fair – Want to connect with an employer, not sure how? What does it take to get into NAIT? Get these answers and more at Boyle Street Education Centre’s (BSEC) Education and Career Fair. When: May 18, 2011: 11am-12:45pm Where: BSEC Video Conference Room Ask Tim and Neda for more information.

Volunteer! Watch Concerts! Watch games! Do you like concerts, football games? You can volunteer to 5 events at a concession stand at Common Wealth Stadium. Wrapping food, serving pop, filling ice and condiments and cash register skills will be learned. During your shift you get free food at breaks. After 5 events you can do pre-event work, then grab your free food and watch the game or concert! Ask Mary, Neda or Tim regarding this opportunity.

Home Depot – Westmount is hiring!

Goldeye Camp 2011 – Students and staff will be going on a 3 day – 2 night camping trip to Goldeye Lake. We will be leaving on May 24 and returning on May 26. If you would like to go, sign up with your homeroom teacher. The camp is right after the long weekend, so if you intend to go do not delay returning to school.

ID – The next ID session with Roxanne will be Wednesday, June 1st, after lunch

Interested in fun, free activities this summer? The Leisure Access program gives low-income families free use of City of Edmonton recreation facilities and attractions for one year! Please see Brandy in student services for more info, or check out: www.edmonton.ca/lap

Sweat – There will be a sweat on Monday, May 16th. If you are interested in attending, please sign-up with your teachers. The van will leave at 9:30 AM and will return to the school by 2:45PM. There is only room for 10 students so don’t wait to sign-up.

Want to be an Actor/Actress!? The Producers of Blackstone, Prairie Dog Film + Television, will be holding an open casting call for Aboriginal Youth aged 14-24 on June 3rd, 2011, at the Stanley A. Milner Library. A sign up sheet will be provided prior to June 3rd and auditions will be conducted by the sign in sheet and then on a first come, first serve basis. Individuals will be called into the casting session one at a time and will read their lines on camera. Auditions will take approximately 5-10 minutes each. The casting call will run from 9:30am – 12:00pm with a one-hour lunch break and then return for the afternoon session from 1:00pm – 4:00pm. Job Shadows – Ask Tim to find you an employer that will show you how they work for a couple of hours in a job you’re interested in.
Post Secondary student shadow – If you’re interested in seeing what a day is like for a student at NAIT, NorQuest or Grant MacEwan, please ask Tim how you can visit the campus and be paired up with a student in your program of choice.

Be Creative; Win a Great Book! The contest to win a copy of Hero Type by Barry Lyga rages on.  Submit an original story or piece of artwork that can be displayed on the website.  If you do, your name will be entered into a draw to win a signed copy of this book!  All entries will be displayed on the website!  Contest closes on October 27 and the winner will be awarded the prize on October 28!
