Information about the Canadian Census

“You may have heard that the 2021 Census is underway. It has been a challenging year for families, and the census might seem like another thing on your busy to-do list. However, I would like to encourage you to complete your census, if you haven’t already done so. Census data helps governments at all levels plan for schools, transportation, community centres, libraries and recreational activities. Data from the 2021 Census will be even more crucial, because it will help to evaluate the impact of the pandemic and to better plan for the future. You can quickly and easily complete your census questionnaire at www.census.gc.ca using the access code you received in the mail. If you need assistance, or would like to have a paper (or alternate format) questionnaire, please call the Census Help Line at 1-855-340-2021. Thank you for doing your part to help plan for a better future for all Canadians.”

School OPEN for In-Person Learning May 5-21

To ensure our students’ needs are properly met, our school is permitted by Alberta Education to remain open for in-person learning (as well as any at-home learning too).

If students are free of COVID-19 symptoms they may attend school in-person. Unless the school experiences an outbreak, we anticipate the ability to operate classes in-person and online between May 5th and May 21. Please call the school at 780-428-1420 if you have any questions.

School Open MONDAY

WE WILL BE OPEN ON MONDAY (as of now). This is the message from our Superintendent, Mavis Averill:

After consulting with Alberta Education and our Board Chair, we have decided to keep the school open during the May 3 -14 school closure times. This decision has been made taking the following into consideration:

  • Consultation with AB ED and Board Chair
  • Wide staff eligibility for immunizations
  • Success at managing COVID spread in our school by successfully applying barriers, personal protective equipment, distancing and sanitizing.
  • Importance of in-person learning and support services for students with severe disabilities

If a new situation arrives, we may have to make a different decision but for now we will keep our school open for in-person supports and learning for our students during the May 3 – 14 school closure times.

BSEC Still Open (In-Person OR at Home)

While some Edmonton schools have shifted to at-home learning only for grades 7-12, BSEC remains available for in-person as well as at-home learning and supports. At this time, we are able to remain available in this manner because there is sufficient physical distance and layered protections in place to allow in-person operation.

Here is what you need to know about attending school:

  • Our students MAY attend in person. Note: ALL safety protocols remain in place for in-person learning. This includes wearing masks at all times in the building, observing physical distance, using hand hygiene regularly and staying away if you have any COVID-19 symptoms.
  • At-home learning IS ALSO AVAILABLE online or in hard copy – communicate with your teachers for more information.
  • Diploma exams are optional – They will still count for 30% of their mark if written.

Please call 780-428-1420 or email email hidden; JavaScript is required if you or your family have any questions.

Can You Come to the Building? Check Here First!

The following link takes you to the revised Youth (<18) and Adult (18+) screening tools (as of November 2nd, 2020).

While the screening tool goes into more detail, you should NOT attend school if you have the following core symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore Throat
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Loss of Smell or Taste

Here is the link to the new screening tools.

As always, if you cannot attend In-Person, you can continue to study remotely by going to www.office.com and entering your BSEC student ID and Password on any internet-capable device (desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone).

Please call 780-428-1420 if you have any questions about COVID screening and school.

Letting Go Ceremony

Wed Nov 4th (9:52 am – 12pm)

Write a letter for someone who is not able to hear or see it.  Go with staff and students to the river to burn it, and then release a rose down the river as a symbol of letting go.

Announcement: Fresh Routes Mobile Grocery Store!

We are excited to announce that our partnership with Fresh Routes has grown! Starting on Friday, September 4th, our school will host the Fresh Routes Mobile Grocery Store for the last hour of the day! Students and Staff are welcome to practice physical distancing while they purchase their fresh foods for the weekend! Please contact the office if you have any questions!

May Break – May 19-22

The school staff are on break as per the calendar approved by our board last spring. While this is usually a time when the school is not accessible to our students, we recognize that some connection is needed during these times.

We will be posting content for students to engage with at our StaffAtBSEC Facebook page (you need to be a friend of the page to view the content).

Also, the school will continue to arrange food baskets to students in need this week. If you need a basket, please send us a message on Facebook Messenger before Wednesday!

Stay well wherever you are and, if you’d like to play, check out our first video – Staff Match Game!

School Re-Entry Plans for 2020-21

School Re-Entry Planning – 2020-21 School Year

As you know, in-person classes are cancelled for the rest of this school year. At present, Alberta Education is working with Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services to prepare school re-entry strategies for the next school year.

The school re-entry plan for Kindergarten to Grade 12 schools for the 2020-21 school year is based on three scenarios that could exist by the fall:

  • Normal operations
  • Schools are open with some health restrictions that affect operations
  • In-person classes remain cancelled and At-Home learning continues

None of these is the “official” plan yet. We have to prepare for all of these scenarios because this public health emergency might suddenly require us to switch from one scenario to another.

Next Year – Registration and Calendar

We will release next year’s registration form in the coming week. We will also release the 2020-21 calendar at the end of this month (along with some other information around the conclusion of this school year). We will share more information about how our school will be conducting re-entry when the planning has been finalized.
