Having students positively involved in the surrounding community is a very important part of the Boyle Street Education Centre. Below is a list of projects that BSEC has been proud to have taken part in. Community Outreach Through Dance Conference Presentation On March 24 and 26, 2004, BSEC students and staff made presentations to the Aboriginal Services Branch of Alberta Learning's 2004 conference entitled "Learning Together for Success". The students wowed convention goers with a 20 minute display that fused traditional drumming and dancing, hip hop and breakdancing, original songs, and fashion designs. The crowd on hand had their breath taken away on more than one occasion, as 23 different BSEC gave an inspired performance. A panel of administration, staff and students also took part in a presentation and round table discussion entitled "The Beat of Boyle Street: Building Positive Attitudes Through Fine Arts". Addictions Conference For the past few years, BSEC students have taken part in a 2 day addictions conference put on by the school. Topics range from body image to suicide prevention to healthy lifestyle alternatives, and feature a wide range of featured guests. Video Project The Video Production Program, headed by Tim Folkman, filmed a Public Service Announcement at BSEC as part of an anti-discrimination program in the school in the summer of 2003. The video was created with funding from the Universiade and Art in Education Grant. Students and staff sang, danced, acted, created props, and helped to produce the 30 second spot, which will be airing on CBC in the near future. Check back soon to see the full commercial online! |
