Announcements – Election Day

MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS TODAY:  Today is the day you get to decide who will lead our city for the next four years.  If you have not yet registered with the city’s electoral officer, and do not know where to vote, all you need to bring with you to your nearest polling station is one piece of government.  If you do not have government issued ID, click on the following link to see what other ID you can bring:  http://www.edmonton.ca/city_government/documents/Voter_Identification_Requirements.pdf.  If you do not know which polling station you should go to, you may click on the following link to find out which polling station you should go to:  http://maps.edmonton.ca/scripts/titles/WhereToVote/WhereToVote_Gadget_Wrapped.asp.  The important part is that you vote.  If you have any questions regarding your right to vote, please ask any of your teachers or anybody in Student Services.


NAIT open house: Check out the programs you could take after high school to find an interesting career. Open house is this Friday and Saturday from 9am- 5pm. Ask Tim for more information. http://www.nait.ca/


Need some dental work? Free dental services will be available THIS SUNDAY at the Shaw Conference Centre from 10 am to 3 pm. For more info, see Brandy in Student Services, or go online to: http://www.homelessconnect.ca/


School Sweat lodge Ceremony– Monday Oct 21st– Open to first ten students who sign up with their homerooms. We leave the school about 9:30 am and will return by 3pm. You will need to bring a towel and shorts/nightgown, extras available if needed. For more information please ask Tim and Cliff.


For LGBTQ youth and allies– Edmonton and Area GSA Roundtable will be hosting special guest Michael Phair on Tuesday, October 15th. As always, there will be free pizza and pop. Join us from 4:30 – 6:00 (room opens at 4:00) in room 7 on the 6th floor of the Stanley A. Milner Library in downtown Edmonton. Ask Tim for more information.

What are my rights as a worker? Check out, Working It Out on Oct. 16 @ 9 am in the Native Studies Room. What is Working It Out? It’s a play that covers many issues that workers face. Ask Neda for more information.


Thinking about employment? Work with Tim or Neda on a resume and job search plan.


Tips for finding a job: Look for work now before the Christmas rush, an employer has time to train you before everyone is scrambling. Retail / warehouses / delivery services will all be busy soon.

Alberta Employment Career Fair

Students are invited to a school wide field trip. Friday, October 4th. We leave the school after lunch by  school bus to the Expo center (Northlands). Students will have the opportunity to see and try hands on demonstrations of careers, talk to employers, have resume reviewed. Please sign up at front desk to reserve your spot.

ADVANCING FUTURES: The deadline for new Advancing Futures applications is September 15th.  This funding is for those who have previously been in care of Children’s Services and are 18 years of age or older.  If you think you may be eligible, please see Cliff in Student Services prior to September 10th.


LIFEGUARD LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY: The Nîkânîw Aboriginal Youth Leadership Program is currently accepting applications for trainees aged 15-22 years.  Nîkânîw combines the cultural teachings and guidance of Aboriginal Elders and Leaders with the instruction of water safety education, first aid, CPR, leadership and life skills.  The program runs Mondays 4:30 – 8:00 PM, from September 9, 2013 – March 2014.  Monthly ETS bus passes, Edmonton Leisure Centre passes, and food will be supplied to all participant.
